I usually give an example of what I think overall and whether or not it has grabbed my attention making me want more of the story. I do fix grammar as well as look at style, emotional triggers, characters, and other things like that. | I am honest, respectful, and diplomatic when I review a piece of writing. I use a template and I give you my personal thoughts and feelings about it. I rate fair and equal to the review I give, but I only give a rating of 5 if the piece is perfect, in my opinion. |
| I have a review template that is only used for in depth reviews, usually those that are specifically requested. These will be as comprehensive as I can manage, including everything I have noticed in reading the piece. Most of my reviews, however, are more in the nature of reactions to the piece with brief notes on things I find particularly good and suggestions on dealing with any obvious flaws in the writing. |
| I'm the lead editor for a small independent press, but I am on maternity leave for the next several years and thus not accepting submissions. I'll tell you my professional opinion on first chapters or short pieces and whether I would have accepted it or rejected it if I was looking for work. I've dealt most with controversial speculative fiction, and I'm most interested in polyamory a.k.a consensual non-monogamy. |
| Brutally honest, but fair. I will give my impressions of the main points: Plot, character, setting, dialog.
Then I will get into grammar, spelling, and typos.
I will tell you what works, and what doesn't.
As far as the star ratings go, I don't rely on them too much, but use them as a measure of an item's relative merit. Take it for what it's worth. Bottom line, my goal is to help the author improve their work. |
| I'm blunt, tell it like it is as I assume that's what is wanted. I give positives/negatives and details. |
| I like to give fair and honest reviews. I will always be polite and will give some tips if needed. Improper grammar in a story is something that bothers me quite a bit and, please, if you absolutely need to swear in your story try to keep it at a minimum and make it part of a character and not a narrative. |
Unsentimental. I focus on the kinds of craft issues that will keep a writer from being taken seriously and prevent them from fully expressing their vision.

| I like a review that makes me edit, even if it bothers me or offends me. So I look at your piece with, "What would I change to make this better and why?" And I write down most of what I think... the limit being how much you paid, more than how much you can handle!
And of course there's no guarantee that my advice won't make it worse. Well, except the long list of bestseller credits-- oh, I haven't published them yet.
But feel free to request a refund if I really like your piece. It's happened, sometimes I'm in too good of a mood and I think your work is perfect. If it was, you'd be submitting it for a royalty advance... praise is nice but it's like Chinese food, you need more in an hour. Whereas critique sticks to your ribs... |
| I give a honest review, I look for improvements maintaining a good rhythm through the narrative. I value clarity in a storyline. I notice when pacing is off balance from one point in the story then the other. I like to focus on Grammer and punctuation as well. I like to give the author a good "WOW" from my review. |
| Casual, friendly. I'll point out typos when I see them and make suggestions about quality, characters and logic, besides telling you how I feel about the piece. |

| I like to be analytical in my reviewing. The most interesting pieces of writing often work on a number of different levels, and so I try to consider multiple perspectives when informing the author of what I liked or disliked about their piece. For this reason, I don't get along very well with templates, as I find they turn the whole process into something very clinical! You can expect my reviews to be a fluid, tailored discussion of your individual work. |
